CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the researcher present introduction consist of background of the study, research problem, research objective, hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope and limitation of the research, and the definition of key term

A.    Background of The Study
Learning a language is an interesting and attracting thing to do. English language is one of the subject that is taught in the school, even in kindergarten has taught it. Since English is an international language, the board of education decided that English must be taught as subject in Indonesia. From elementary until senior high school up to university.
As we know English language teaching has identified into four skills; they are speaking, listening, writing and reading[1]. These four basic skills are inextricably linked. Reading skill is very important in teaching learning process; because reading can help the students more understanding the text. Teaching reading not only read the text but also the students can comprehend the content of the text. So, the students are easier to comprehend the information of the text.
Reading is the meaningful interpretation of the printed verbal symbols[2]. And also reading is the most important language skill[3]. It means that the students still poorly to understand the content of the text. There are many students dislike to study about reading. Especially reading comprehension, so the students think that teaching reading only read the text. In fact, teaching reading is very important to develop their knowledge. By reading, the students understand the meaning of the text. If the students understand the meaning of the text. The students can understand the content of text, and they can get new information from the text.
Teaching reading is very importance in teaching learning process because reading can help the students understand the text easily. The lecturers usually teach the students reading only ordered to read the text and answer the text questions as soon as the text. There are many techniques used by the lecturer in teaching learning process of reading comprehension, for examples. Natural Approach, GTM. Communicative Approach and ect. These techniques are less effective in learning reading comprehension. Because the students look like boring and low spirit to learn reading comprehension. They do not pay attention again with the lecturer explanation. So, it is a problem for the lecturer in her teaching learning process in this case the researcher wants to try one strategy of reading comprehension namely scanning strategy. It means that by using scanning strategy in teaching learning of reading comprehension, the students can be easy to comprehend the text and they can increase their English skill especially on reading skill. Scanning is very important for teaching learning of reading comprehension. By scanning the students can read the text quickly. The students cannot waste time to comprehend the content of the text. Scanning is very important for teaching learning of reading comprehension. They also can get information as much as possible quickly.
Scanning is very high speed rising when students scan.[4] In fact. Scanning is very important to develop knowledge quickly, Scanning is new strategy of reading, especially reading comprehension. Scanning help the students to read quickly, by scanning the students will not read word by word and the students will understand the meaning of the text. If the students know the meaning of the text, the students can understand what the content of text quickly and the students can answer quickly if the lecturer question. The purpose of scanning will help the students to find some information quickly.
In the reality at STAIN Pamekasan there are many students take a sleep in teaching learning process of reading comprehension at the classroom, in these cases there are many students who can read the text but they cannot understand the content of text, for example: in learning teaching of reading process at classroom when the lecturer gave the text to the students and ordered them to present about the text in front of the classroom. There are some students which directly present it but when they read the text, they cannot understand the meaning and the content of text.
And also there are some students who can understand the meaning the content of text but they cannot read the text well, for example: when the lecturer ordered to students to understand the meaning and the content of text, the students have good ability to understand the meaning and content of text but when they read the students cannot read it well.
Based on the reason above. The researcher interested in conducting research under title, the correlation between the students ability in scanning English text and students reading comprehension, in this research, the researcher would like to know the correlation between the students’ ability in scanning English text and students reading comprehension at second semester of English education program of STAIN Pamekasan.

B.   Research Problem
